Early E.Gomme Chest of Drawers
Early E.Gomme Chest of Drawers
An elegant early mid-century chest of drawers produced by E. Gomme, dating from the period just before the company began trading under the now-iconic G-Plan name.
Crafted in richly toned hardwood, most likely afromosia, the piece has a deep, warm colour and fine, even grain that immediately sets it apart from later mass-market production. The four generously proportioned drawers are fitted with solid brass handles, their understated geometry adding a refined note of luxury while remaining true to the clean, architectural language of early British modernism.
This earlier E. Gomme work is particularly sought after for its balance of restraint and quality. Before the full G-Plan branding emerged, pieces like this were produced with a strong emphasis on durability, proportion and material integrity — furniture designed to last, both structurally and aesthetically. The gently tapered legs with brass feet lift the form beautifully, giving the chest a lightness that works effortlessly in both contemporary and period interiors.
The chest is presented in very good vintage condition. The wood has been carefully cleaned and refreshed, retaining a rich, even tone with only minor age-related marks visible in places, consistent with its age and use. The brass handles and feet show gentle patination, adding character without detracting from the overall appearance. All drawers run smoothly and the piece is solid and well balanced.
A timeless and versatile storage piece, offering generous practicality alongside quiet mid-century elegance.
