midcentury 'Petersfield' sideboard by white & newton
A superb example of British modernist design by Philip Hussey for White & Newton, crafted in the late 1960s. This is the ‘Petersfield’ model — named after the Hampshire town close to the firm’s base in Portsmouth — and it’s one of the standout pieces from Hussey’s tenure as chief designer.
Made in rich teak with subtle modernist detailing, the Petersfield combines clean lines with gentle curves. The top edge is softly lipped, the drawers and doors feature integrated handles, and the proportions are elegant and understated throughout. Inside, you’ll find a well-considered mix of storage — a bank of three drawers (the top one lined and with dividers), flanked by shelved cupboards, one of which includes a pull-out drinks tray.
It’s a refined, functional piece that perfectly captures White & Newton’s move toward more streamlined, architecturally influenced furniture under Hussey’s direction — pieces like this made them a quiet powerhouse of British mid-century design.
Presented in very good original vintage condition throughout, with only light signs of age and use, inc a small cosmetic mark to the top.
