Vintage Maritime Shipping Trunk – M.V. Apapa, c.1930–1960
Vintage Maritime Shipping Trunk – M.V. Apapa, c.1930–1960
A wonderful large vintage wooden shipping trunk, believed to date from the mid-20th century, with its original dark painted exterior and striking yellow shipping lettering.
The trunk retains various original markings, including the name H. A. Peters, an address in Troon, Ayrshire, and shipping instructions reading ‘PASS. PER M.V. APAPA. VIA LIVERPOOL.’ The M.V. Apapa was a passenger and cargo vessel operated by Elder Dempster Lines, which ran services between Liverpool and West Africa during the 20th century.
Constructed from solid timber, the trunk features a hinged lid, metal carrying handles and a beautifully contrasting natural wood interior, offering a generous amount of storage space.
The exterior has a lovely timeworn appearance, with areas of paint loss, scratches and general wear accumulated over the years. The bold yellow lettering remains particularly striking against the dark finish and gives the piece plenty of character.
A wonderfully versatile piece that would make a great coffee table, a substantial blanket box at the end of a bed, or simply a characterful storage chest.
A lovely example of vintage maritime luggage, with an interesting history and plenty of practical use.
